Nitric oxide production at the site of lateral root emergence. Maize transverse root sections loaded with DAF-2 DA and observed by bright-field and fluorescence microscopy as described in “Materials and methods”. Effects of independent 20 mg C L−1 humic acids (HA), 10−8 M N-isopropyldecanamide and 200 μM sodium nitroprusside (SNP) treatments. The fluorescence intensity of the images was estimated by measuring the pixel intensity and analyzed with ImageJ (NIH) software. Data are expressed as arbitrary units (AUs).
